Canadore College's first-semester Social Service Worker (SSW) and Personal Support Worker (PSW) students are seeking opportunities to practice academic and vocational communication skills. They are developing generic skills in researching, organizing, reframing, analyzing, writing, and presenting information.

Learners, who are a mix of domestic and international students, will work on one main project over the experience of the semester, connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools.

These students are on campus at Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario, approximately 3 hours north of Toronto.

Deliverables are negotiable and will seek to align the needs of the learners and the organization. 


Some final project deliverables might include the following: 

  1. One or more social media or blog posts written from their perspective, with or without cited introductory-level research based on your needs
  2. A short informal report outlining their introductory-level research, analysis, insights, and recommendations
  3. A slideshow or video-taped presentation on key findings and recommendations on a topic important to your organization
  4. A request letter or email message as a useful template for your organization
  5. A personal self-reflection or opinion piece on a topic important to your organization

Learners, individually or in groups of 3-5, will work to provide entry-level writing and/or actionable recommendations based on their introductory-level research and analysis on one or more topics of interest your organization identifies as important to you.


With clear instruction, support, and guidance from you, students in this first-semester college communications course can contribute generic skills in researching, organizing, reframing, analyzing, writing, and presenting information.


Areas of interest are healthcare and wellness (physical, mental, and social).


Project activities that learners can complete may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • writing for social media, blogs, internal communications, short informal reports, and/or presentations 
  • introductory-level research, analysis, decision-making and problem-solving
